Smoothie Diet Tips

Smoothie diet examplesSmoothie Diet (aka smoothy diet) users are rapidly growing in number. All you need is a blender (the more powerful the better) and a ready supply of fruit, vegetables and other nutritious ingredients. Smoothies can offer a convenient and nutritious meal replacement and are an easy way to achieve a higher proportion of raw plant food into your diet. For example, the Green Smoothie (recipe below) is the easy way to eat salad ingredients and get the best from raw vegetables.

Smoothie Diet Tips

  • When a recipe calls for ice cubes, substitute with frozen fruit.
  • Bananas can be peeled and cut up into 2 centimetre (1 inch) slices before freezing.
  • To freeze fresh berries, spread singly over a baking tray, stick in the freezer and then transfer to a resealable freezer bags.
  • Add yoghurt, wheat germ, silken tofu, flax seeds, and protein powder to your smoothie for an extra nutritional hit.
  • Always rinse out the blender right after you use it, even if you’re planning to wash it later – it’ll sake you a stack of time and hard work.
  • Don’t always add sugar or sweetener as directed in a smoothie recipe: always taste it first.
  • The natural sweetness of the fruit varies (as do personal tastes) and you may not need it.

The smoothie diet is best for people with a busy lifestyle and for those  who don’t always enjoy eating healthy stuff. They can be a great way to mask the taste of very healthy ingredients that are good for us but which taste terrible.

Green Smoothie Diet

Smoothie diets help you consume essential vitamins and fiber in an easy and sensible manner. No one I know could sit down each and every day and eat a huge bowl of raw broccoli, spinach, kale, collards, cabbage and celery. And not too many salads contain the likes of pak choi, beet, turnip and mustard greens, chard, arugula and dandelion leaves. But make them into a wonderful green smoothie and anyone can enjoy it quickly and easily all day long. It’s the perfect “between meals” snack and kids soon get to love them.

Of course, smoothies need not always be green. A wide variety of ingredients mixed

together will make a wonderful-tasting and health-giving smoothie. Just fruit, or you can add dairy products such as yogurt or nonfat ice cream to make them rich and creamy.  Add wheat germ, ground oats, flax seeds, nuts, or other nutritious items to your smoothie recipe to increase the fibre and vitamin content for a quick, nutritious meal in a glass.

Experts say that we should be eating between 40-60% raw fruit and vegetables each and every day in order to prolong our lives and reduce the risk of cancers, liver and heart disease. The smoothie diet is the obvious, easy way to achieve this. Advocates of the green smoothie, such as Robyn Openshaw-Pay suggest the figure should be nearer 80-90%. The smoothie diet is still in its infancy but already nutritionalists and doctors are predicting that it could help reduce the risk of cancers and other killer ailments by up to 25%.

Spirulina is a  super food that is packed with useful vitamins and antioxidants. You buy it in powdered form in your local health shop, but (like so many healthy things) it doesn’t taste particularly tasty. Here’s a great healthy way to  make a delicious fruit-filled Spirulina Smoothie that tastes delicious and does you lots of good.

Smoothie Diet Recipe: Spirulina Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • The juice of three oranges (it’s best to squeeze them fresh for this recipe)
  • A handful of mixed berries (blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, or whatever you fancy)
  • Half a small tub of thick Greek yoghurt
  • 1 tbsp Spirulina powder

When it comes to making a smoothie less tart, you want to try and make do with the natural sweetness of fruit (mango and peaches are great) rather than adding sugar or (very unhealthy) artificial sweeteners. If you have to add anything make it liquid honey or maple syrup. If you really must include sugar, remember that powdered or icing sugar will dissolve a lot better than granulated and give a better texture.

Smoothie diet ideas will eventually come thick and fast: just always make sure you make your smoothies part of a balanced, healthy diet.
